Our History

One shear and one press brake.

That’s how this family-owned and operated company started off as a small first-stage fabricator in 1974.  Soon, after seeing the growing need our customers had for plate, Willbanks Metals decided to get into the distribution business by providing the best quality steel plate we could find at a reasonable cost for the customers we serviced.

In 1978 the company bought its first de-coil line and began meeting specialized needs by providing custom, cut to length sheet and plate straight from the coil. This not only gave Willbanks an edge on customer pricing of fabricated products but also provided an opportunity to expand further into the steel distribution business.

In the early 80’s the company built a structural products division and began distributing angle, flat bar, channel, tubing, rebar, round rod, pipe, and beam. In time, as customer’s needs grew, WMI added bigger and better press brakes, oxy fuel tables, lasers, plate rolls, angle rolls and more.

Seeing an opportunity to offer more cost reductions to our fabrication customers, in 2003, the company embarked on growing its mill plate distribution business.  Willbanks Metals now provides over nine different grades of plate in more than one hundred different sizes to fabricate almost anything our customers need.

In late 2010, we added our first Bradbury cut-to-length line to our Flat Roll Distribution. This increased our cut to length capability to a true ½” thickness x 96” width, utilizing up to grade 80 coils. The Bradbury cut to length line eliminates camber, waviness, chatter, coil break, long edge, center buckle, oil can, and, most importantly, the Bradbury keeps your steel flat after heat is applied through plasma, oxy, or laser cutting.

In late 2011, we upgraded one of our other cut to length lines with this same state of the art Bradbury E-drive System with the addition of Flat-Trak Technology. This addition gives WMI three precision cut to length lines with unmatched quality and production capacity in the Southwest.

Over the last several years, in conjunction with our core values of excellence, accuracy and benefiting our customers, we have invested heavily into automation and technology. We have deployed state of the art computer systems, added high-speed automation to our bending process, and world-class, automated laser cutting technology.

Our goal is to give you a quality product, the way you want it and when you need it. With all of this capacity, equipment and expertise WMI can handle any of your custom fabrication needs.
